Discovering what to do with your life

Whereas most people know exactly what they want to do in life and how to get there, others do not have a clue.

These important decisions range from the choice of course to study in the University, what career that choice would lead to and even the choice of a life partner for some people. And it is never easy to make any of these choices.

This should however not be of much concern to many, because it is not really a problem. Even if your parents, friends or teachers are pushing for you to make a choice, you do not have to make a final decision now.

Many parents, scholarship agencies and even students would like a final decision from the beginning of the university studies, but this is not always the path to a rewarding experience. University education rightly aims to offer new ways of thinking and seeing the world, so why restrict this experience from the beginning?

New experiences, looking for a program, passing tests and finding a corresponding career are valuable elements that make a university education.

Choosing a program of study

Before arriving in university, the only subjects the average high school graduate would have studied are those necessary for graduating from high school, thus it is almost impossible for students to choose a program in the university.

Some programs lead directly to a career after graduation, they are such professional programs like journalism, social work, IT and education.

It is important to discuss your choice with your teachers, your friends, family members and other students. Evaluate your skills to see if they match your interests, and learn about the options available to you in different areas.

If you are undecided, but wish to study IT, register for a course in IT. BlueCrest College has a breadth of offerings from certificate and diploma programmes, undergraduate, as well as postgraduate degrees in Information Technology, Business Administration, Mass Communication, Fashion and Design.

As there are many elective courses in first and second year, you will have the opportunity to find what really interests you and change your choice as needed along the way.

What is a major?

A major is a concentration of courses in subjects that will guide your academic and intellectual training.

The courses you choose for your major should interest you and excite you as it will make up almost a third and three-quarters of your study and stay in school.

A major is one of the most important pieces of your university education but it does not necessarily define your future career path.

What program of study will directly determine my profession?

Sometimes, choosing to study courses like journalism, nursing, fashion or transport studies will directly determine your profession and career path. This is however not always the case. Studying courses like management studies and economics would lead to a wide variety of careers that require analytical skills, critical thinking and communication skills.

Examine the options and learn more about the route to be followed to get through the career paths that interest you. You will find that undergraduate education gives you access to expertise that will open the door to many paths in any career path you choose.

With hundreds of possibilities and combinations available to you at university, it’s good to have the flexible choice. Do your research, and if you have to change major, ask an academic advisor to guide you with the options available.
