School of Survey, Mapping closed after clashes over land

At a press conference on Tuesday, the Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Amewu, also directed that the school’s staff be reassigned.

Some of the students clashed with land guards last week Monday

“Students are directed to vacate the school premises and the hostel facilities with immediate effect,” Mr. Amewu said.

“I direct the management of the Lands Commission to ensure that the staff at the school should be re-assigned other duties that would effectively support the agenda to reduce the turnaround time in land title registration in the country,” he added.

Some students of the school went on rampage on May 2, 2017 following claims that the school’s land has been sold for the construction of a shopping mall.

The students destroyed properties belonging to the contractor working on the land as well as that of the Lands Commission.

But Mr Amewu has denied claims that the school’s land has been sold to a private developer by the Lands Commission for the building of a shopping mall.

According to him, part of the land, located near the 37 Military Hospital in Accra will be used for an office complex for the Commission.

Mr. Amewu has, therefore, served further notice that “since the project site has been handed over to the contractors, unauthorized persons are not to be permitted on the premises and the contractors to take full responsibility of the site.”

He also advised contractors to “remove all unauthorized structures on the project site.”
