Dog almost kills student, 1 month after 13-yr-old pupil was bitten to death

Manga Netha, a 22-year-old nearly lost her life, only a month after two pit bull terriers fatally mauled a 13-year-old, Fred Savage, in Otjomuise.

The biochemistry student had just alighted from a taxi when the dog escaped from an opened gate and attacked her without provocation.

Netha escaped with deep gashes that could have been worse if she had not bravely fought for her life.

"It was pushing me with its head but I held tight onto a pole to prevent myself from being pulled to the ground," she told New Era of Namibia.

"The owner came out running and pulled and pushed it off me. I was seriously injured on my right thigh and left calf. I am lucky to be alive,"

She said the dog owner took her to a private hospital for treatment.

Her family are laying a charge against the dog owner at Klein Kuppe police station after her wounds failed to heal.

"Ever since I have been in pain and have even missed classes," she added.

Netha's mother, Charity Tuwelo, is furious and wants government action against people who keep dangerous pets.

"I want pit bulls to be banned," she said.

"They are very aggressive and dangerous to society. We are not safe in our neighborhoods."

The Police spokesperson, Inspector Slogan Matheus, said a case has been instituted against the dog owner.
