21-yr-old student, musician, songwriter arrested at hemp smoking contest

Ghana Police have arrested a 21-year-old Senior High School (SHS) student and a musician alongside other suspects at a weed smoking competition in the country’s Northern Region.

Mumuni Hamza was caught with singer Kelvin Collins Johnson and his 24-year-old producer and songwriter, Joseph Akobra, at House Number Extension 10 at Sagnarigu, a suburb of the Sagnarigu District.

They reportedly had three mini sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at the time of their arrest.

Student Pulse gathered that the three had converted at the house of a colleague, identified as Faisal, for a hemp smoking competition.

According to the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, the suspects were arrested following a tip-off.

He said the suspects tried to escape when they say the police but were caught, with the exception of 'Faisal' who is still at large.

Apart from the hemp, police recovered several wraps of cannabis, partially smoked wraps, a whitish powdery substance suspected to be cocaine, 41 assorted SIM cards, two HP laptops, and two modems.

The suspects have claimed that the Indian hemp belonged to Faisal, claiming there were only on a visit.

All three were remanded in prison following their arraignment before the Tamale District Magistrate Court II presided over by Anthony Essah.

Their trial continues on the 20th of July.
