Pope John suspends two ‘gay’ students

This is not the first time students at a boys school have been suspended or sacked for engaging in alleged homosexual activity.

Two students of the Pope John Senior High and Minor Seminary have been suspended after they were allegedly caught engaging in homosexual activity.

The two unnamed students were among a group of 19 who were investigated by the school for homosexuality, Accra-based Starr FM reports.

Although the school’s headmistress, Benedicta Foli, did not comment on the veracity of the report, she told Starr FM it was an internal matter and the school wanted to keep it as such.

This is not the first time students at a boys school have been suspended or sacked for engaging in alleged homosexual activity. In January, three students of Opoku Ware Senior High School were also suspended by the disciplinary committee.

Many of Ghana’s top secondary schools were established by Christian missionaries and in many cases still run these schools. Many students suspended for homosexuality will either drop out or switch their schools.

Homosexuality is condemned by Ghana’s religious bodies and by a large section of the society, and an archaic sodomy law is still on the books although convictions are rare.

Despite being a very conservative society, strides have been made in advocacy to turn Ghana away from other African countries such as Nigeria where gays can face up to 20 years in jail. Sex education is also very minimal in the curriculum.
