Almost every teacher trainees will have to take a training course, pass a test and obtain a licence before setting foot in a classroom.

The GES has announced that teachers will now have to pass a special examination before being granted the licence to teach.

The move is to enforce discipline and eliminate non-performing teachers from the system, in accordance with the new Teachers Licencing Policy under the Education Act 778 (2008).

The new regime is expected to be introduced next year.

Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Rev. Jonathan Bettey said the Ghana Education Service (GES) has served notice henceforth all teacher trainee graduates will take a licensing exams.

He said "Before we recognize you as a professional teacher, you will need to be licensed."

He disclosed that beginning next January 2018, the ministry would undertake re-registration of all teachers in the country to facilitate the issuance of the licences.

Rev. Jonathan Bettey in an interview on Accra-based Starr FM said "Teachers who fail the exams will not be allowed to teach at a certain level. To be seen as a professional, you will have to pass the licensing exams."
