Many Ghanaians have acquired certificates illegally – Legon Vice Chancellor

He indicated that some students have used fraud and plagiarism to maneuver their way through their academic periods

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey has lamented the illegal means by which some students have acquired certificates from various tertiary institutions.

According to Prof. Aryeetey, the University of Ghana is investigating certificates of some fifteen individuals who are working in the public sector and need verification of their certificates.

He indicated that some students have used fraud and plagiarism to maneuver their way through their academic periods and are walking around with certificates which they obtained dubiously.

Speaking at the 70 graduation ceremony of the Trinity Theological Seminary in Accra, Prof. Aryeetey said “there are far too many Ghanaians who claim to have certificates that they do not have…there are far too many Ghanaians in public spaces who have certificates they acquired illegitimately.”

The ceremony saw some two hundred and forty students graduate with Masters of Divinity, Masters of Theology, Masters of Arts in Ministry and Bachelor of Theology.

Urging universities across the country to jealously guard their reputation, the Professor advised that all tertiary institutions eliminate students and academic staff who corrupt the system and tarnish the image of the institutions.

He said “it is time as Ghanaians that we assessed ourselves, ensuring that everybody who goes to our Universities, Polytechnics, and Seminaries are taking away certificates they have worked for.”
