Schools in Kwahu remain closed over Fulani attacks

Residents have raised concerns that some Fulani herdsmen are terrorising them and putting their lives in danger.

Six schools around some communities in the Kwahu East district of the Eastern region have been closed down.

This follows concerns by residents that some Fulani herdsmen are terrorising them and putting their lives in danger.

The Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Emmanuel Asiedu Acheampong has told Accra-based Starr FM that over 1000 pupils including have been asked to stay at home.

He indicated that even final year Junior High School students have been asked not to return to school over fears that they might be attacked.

“They are armed, they attack you on your farm and if you don’t yield to their demands sometimes they molest you and…shoot you. They can kill you if you resist them…it is affecting economic activities,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Darfour, had earlier insisted that there is calm in the district.

He said all that was left was for residents to be assured that the situation is under control.
