John Jinapor, former Deputy Power Minister has made a petition seeking for clarity into government’s renegotiation of the terms of the Power Compact II agreement signed with the Millennium Challenge Corporation(MCC)

The President while giving his May Day address disclosed that government is renegotiating the agreement concerning government’s stake in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Nana Addo announced that government seeks to reduce the span of the agreement from 25 to 20 years and maintain a bigger Ghanaian percentage.

A major facet of the renegotiation would be government’s assurance of no involuntary layoffs as the result of the concession, the President stated.

In relation to the president’s speech, the former Deputy Power Minister has asked for a clarification from opposing parties MCC or MiDA if they agree on renegotiating the original terms of the deal with government.

“Agreements are not renegotiated unilaterally. The fact that there is an agreement means that there are two or more parties. The first question to ask then is that has this agreement been effected or it is just a proposal. I have heard some government spokespersons indicate that it’s a proposal, others indicated that it’s a change in agreement’ he told journalists in Accra.

Mr. Jinapor says he’ll submit official letters to both the MCC and MiDA seeking confirmation from these corporations on their true stance of the president’s latest announcement.

‘If they have repealed the agreement or they have changed it, the people of Ghana require that information.” he said.
