Kojo Oppong Nkrumah; my time to lead

I realized early on, that a man’s current successes are not enough until that success has been cemented to withstand the shocks of life and the changes of time- Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

Ever since Aristotle, conventional wisdom has said, a robust middle class is a sine qua non (indispensable condition) for a stable democracy.

Put simply, no middle class, no democracy! You can now understand my delight when I heard Ace journalist Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and Marketing Guru George Andah had decided to venture into active politics. This may be the beginning of the end of politics as we know it!

Don't get me wrong, this article is not to endorse any candidate, it is to  tell a story about an individual and his successes in life. Choose whoever you want to to lead you.

What better way to inspire the younger generation than to tell the stories of young Ghanaians who have risen above themselves to make a mark.

- Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in his Meet the Boss interview.

This was a 24 year old man, who knew exactly what he was about right from the beginning. He knew where he really wanted to go, exactly what he wanted to do, and when he wanted to do it.

If you didn’t know, Joy FM’s super morning show was as big as morning shows get in Ghana. As far as English Format morning shows are concerned the super morning show has  highest ratings, highest exposure and perhaps the most discerning listeners.

But here was a young man, who had gotten the rare chance of being the voice of this show and already had the end in mind from the beginning.

Kojo even before from the beginning,  had a different outlook on life that fuelled his ambition and drive to succeed. As many Know,  the former renowned broadcaster grew up in a fairly comfortable  environment, with his father being  a banker who rose to be head of the treasurer of Barclays Bank Ghana. His mother was a Senior High School  English teacher.

But his growing success is not down to his beginnings at all. As you will find out in  the Meet the Boss Video above, he had his own personal drive to succeed due to a tragic incident that befell his family at an early stage in his life, which gave him a different perspective to life. ( He tells the story in the Meet the Boss video above.)

The aspiring Mp for Afoase- Ayeribi said.

It all started when CEO of the Multimedia Group, Kwasi Twum, and the Finance Manager of British American Tobacco all asked  him to come work for them after his University education, young Kojo Oppong Nkrumah chose both.  And found the balance to get the best out of the two.

Looking back, Kojo says every Ghanaian must have the burning to succeeded. They must be ready to take all opportunities that come their way with both hands, and have an extreme mastery of balance to get maximum benefits out of each opportunity.

While his experience with the British American Tobacco Company groomed him into an astute businessman,  Kwasi Twum’s multimedia moulded him into a fine broadcaster. It is not surprising that whereas he appeared to be the king of morning shows for many Ghanaians, he was concurrently building a formidable investment company Brownstone Capital with as little noise as possible. Not many people knew that his morning show career was just a tip of a rather huge iceberg of a man who was launching a multi-generational assault on poverty. He was building a business conglomerate.

Time was up

“ It wasn’t difficult to leave the morning show. Because I said clearly that I was doing this for 5 years The show was its peak then. But it was easy to leave. Because I knew exactly what my plan was. In life it is always important to have a grip on who you are and what the grand picture is. You have to know exactly- Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in excerpts of his session of Meet the Boss, uploaded above.

Politics

I am sure you are wondering, just like me,  why Kojo entered active party politics. Well, you may have to watch the video above to get that answer. But for more people what is important is the fact that a man like him has entered politics.

For many, it symbolises a new era for Ghanaian politics, where the middle class are perhaps deciding to take matters into their own hands, and effect the change they want.

Many have criticized Africa’s so called middle class for standing aloof while the little in the political class reap the continent apart with their greed, ignorance and lack of planning.

It seems refreshing that in Ghana, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and former head of marketing at MTN, George Andah have decided to lead the way.

I asked Kojo if he  can stand the dirt and malice in Ghana’s political space. And whether scrutiny he may receive as a broadcaster who held politicians responsible for things that people will be watching out for, as far his own political career is concerned.

He says the aim is to change the way politics is done in Ghana from the sharing of money and goodies in return for votes, to one that ensures that systems are built to enable people make money for themselves. The aim is to bring some freshness to how politics is done in Ghana.

We will see how Kojo Oppong Nkrumah fares first of all in the parliamentary race taking on an opponent who's party is in power, and then hope that he starts a political revolution if or when he does get into power
