Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has since his election as President of Ghana allegedly embarked on a ‘Spring Cleaning’ of public workers. A whopping 13,000 workers in the public sector have been purportedly shown the exit point in the last five months of his administration.

Most of the workers who have been sacked were employed during the tenure of the opposition National Democratic Congress.

Rumors surrounding the issue highlight that the New Patriotic party suspect that the previous government hired many works who were merely sympathizers in various positions for which they were not qualified and this exercise is a fulfilment of their promise to get rid of them.

Reports also say that big influencers of the party including Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong have pushed the president to making these unpopular decisions. According to the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, 205 employees of the National Service Scheme were unceremoniously dismissed by President Akufo-Addo in the first month of administration.

Among such layoffs that has generated a lot of controversy are those of Dr Thomas Anaba, Medical Director of the Ridge Regional Hospital; Alfred Ogbamey. Communication Director of Ghana Gas and Mr Seidu Kotomah of the Contoller and Accountant General Department.
