CSOs demand transparency on Goldfields $33m tax exexmptions

Goldfields Ghana Limited, in March, revealed to journalists in Accra that government had finally agreed to give them tax and royalty concessions to the tune of $33 million.

Some civil society organisations have raised questions about the deal ever since.

One of them is the Third World Network, who are not satisfied with the answers being provided to questions about the deal, like whether such a deal is legal or not.

“ We have also requested for the disclosure of the document, but no one seems to be interested. Neither has the purported document from parliament that is said to have supported the agreement has also not been provided”, Coordinator of the Third World Network”, Dr. Yao Graham says.

In a latest twist of events, The Chairman of the Mining Review Committee (MRC), mandated by law to negotiate such agreements on behalf of government, Professor Akilakpa Sawyerr says the MRC was not involved in the negotiations of the Gold Fields mining deal with government.

Government is yet to respond to these questions, something Dr. Graham of the Third World Network says will not help matters.

“Silence is not in the interest of the Ghanaian people and I think these agencies, particularly the minister, the minerals commission and parliament and the Attorney General, have the responsibility to come out and clear the air.”
