He explained that the author of the letter should have written like the traditions of Ghana demanded. He argued that the dismissed Cocobod boss had served the country in a certain capacity and even if he belonged to another party “there should be a letter thanking him for his work.”

Speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM, he added that the letter should then proceed to inform him that at “such and such time and that he should hand over to this officer”.

This was contained in a letter dated Thursday, January 12 and signed by the president's Executive Secretary. Dr Opuni was given up to the end of Friday, 13 January, to vacate his office.

The letter said Dr Opuni “ceases to hold office as CEO of Cocobod upon assumption of office of President Nana Akufo-Addo.”

However, the retired diplomat who was also Secretary to Ghana's First President Dr Kwame Nkrumah, said “the letter is not polite”.

“It is not nice…I don’t like the tone of the letter and those who wrote it should know better…it is not Ghanaian.”

He explained that in the Ghanaian culture, even if one wants to insult an official, you do that in a nice way.

“It should be a nice letter. …When we were asked by Nkrumah to do things, we did it as Ghanaian custom demanded,” he concluded.
