Champion, Sizzler and others closed down for insurance infringement

The owners of commercial buildings were given prior notice about two weeks ago to comply with the directives, therefore, the arrest was to enforce the law.

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) Taskforce has arrested five persons for failing to insure their commercial property in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

They are the managers of Petro Bay, Sycamore Medical Centre, Sizzler Paris Restaurant and Le Champion Supermarket.

The taskforce was made up of officials of the NIC, personnel from the Police Service, and the Ghana National Fire Service. The leader of the taskforce, Mr. Joseph Bentor, told the media in Takoradi that the exercise formed part of moves to enforce Sections 183 and 184 of the Insurance Act, Act 724 of 2006.

The Act prescribes that private commercial buildings or property should be insured against collapse, flood, fire, earthquake and any other hazard.

He said the owners of commercial buildings were given prior notice about two weeks ago to comply with the directives, therefore, the arrest was to enforce the law.

Mr. Bentor said only 20 per cent of those notified complied with the directives and gave the assurance that those arrested would be put before court soon.

He said insuring commercial property would safeguard the safety of staff and any other user so that in the event of any disaster those affected would have insurance package.
