Life and profile of Dr Henry Wampah

Outgoing Governor of the Bank of Ghana

Dr. Henry Kofi Wampah started working at the Bank of Ghana on September 1986 as first deputy manager of the bank.

On February 1996 to 2001, he worked as the Head of the Research Department of Bank of Ghana.

He worked as a part-time staff at the International Monetary Fund as a Special Appointee from May to December 1998 and with the Monetary Operations Division of the Monetary and Exchange Affairs Department and the Africa Department.

He was later appointed Director of the Research and Statistics Department of the West African Monetary Institute after April 2001.

Dr. Wampah also served as Acting Chairman at Ghana International Bank Public Limited Company and has been Director Ghana International Bank Public Limited Company since November 25, 2009.

On April 16, 2009, he was appointed as 1st Deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana.

Dr. Wampah took over as governor in an acting capacity in April 2013 from Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur who was then the Governor of the Central Bank. On April 4, 2013, he was confirmed as the substantive governor by President John Mahama.

Dr Wampah had a B.A. (Hons) Economics and Statistics degree in 1977 from the University of Ghana, Legon. He studied for a Masters’ degree (1983) and a Ph.D (1986) in Economics with specializations in econometrics and public finance from McGill University.

He had his secondary education at Hohoe E. P. Secondary School (GCE ‘O’ Level) and Konongo-Odumase Secondary School (GCE ‘A’ Level).

Wampah is married with four children.
