Ghanaians living in South Africa run to their president, Nana Akufo-Addo for help

A Ghanaian in South Africa, Donald told Accra-based Starr FM that they are living in fear and that their movements had been limited.

“We are indoors more because of the xenophobic attacks.”

He said all attempts to reach the Ghanaian High Commission for assistance had been unsuccessful.

Xenophobic attacks

Many Nigerians, Ghanaians and other African nationals have complained of rising attacks on them.

The attackers say the foreigners are taking over their jobs and are the cause of crimes in their neighbourhoods.

Meanwhile, Ghana's Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway has said that the government is closely monitoring the situation.

“A lot of engagement has taken place between the mission and Ghanaians [and] we are closely monitoring the situation,” she said.

She added that the government of Ghana has summoned the South African High Commissioner to Ghana, Lulu Xingwana to get her assurance that “our nationals will be safe.”
