The flights, which are already on sale, will operate four times a week starting from September 28, increasing to five times a week in the winter.

The route will be operated on the airline's 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which has 344 seats.

Norwegian Air announced on Thursday that it will launch a new direct route from London Gatwick to Singapore Changi Airport in September starting at £179 ($230) one way.

The flights, which are already on sale, will operate four times a week starting from September 28, increasing to five times a week in the winter.

The route will be operated on the airline's 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which has 344 economy and premium seats.

While the economy fares are cost-effective, the premium cabin seats start at £699 ($897) one way, which includes lounge access at Gatwick, more legroom, a complimentary meal service, and "generous baggage allowance."

The move is part of the airline's efforts to expand its low-cost long-haul flights into new global markets, including Asia, opening up more options for business travellers.

In February, it announced that it will launch flights from the US Northeast to Europe for as low as $65 (£50).

Starting in June, the Norwegian low-cost carrier will operate flights using its new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aeroplanes to destinations in Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland from its bases in Orange County, New York, Hartford, and Providence.

Icelandic low-cost airline WOW Air launched a sale with $70 (£55) fares from the US West Coast to Europe with a stopover in Reykjavík, Iceland.

In a press release, Norwegian CEO Bjorn Kjos said: "Our transatlantic flights have shown the huge demand for affordable long-haul travel, so we are delighted to expand into new markets and offer our first route to Asia from the UK."

"Travel should be affordable for all, so adding Singapore to our growing UK network will give passengers even more choice for affordable, quality travel to a range of global destinations."
