2016 was a tough year for hedge funds.

The industry as a whole only delivered a 5.4% return for clients, well below the S&P 500's return of 11.9%, according to data from eVestment.

Following are the top nine earnings from the list:

7. Paul Singer, founder of Elliott Management - $590 million

6. Kenneth Griffin, founder of Citadel - $600 million

5. David Tepper, founder and president of Appaloosa Management - $700 million

3. David Siegel, co-founder and co-chairman of Two Sigma Investments - $750 million
