Shea conference in Accra to highlight food security

The shea industry promotes food security by providing a healthy source of vegetable fat, fresh fruits, and a diversified source of income—up to 12% annually for some of the poorest rural families.

The Global Shea Alliance is to hold its ninth annual international conference at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra under the theme “Shea 2016: Enhancing Farm Value.”

In a blogpost, the Shea Alliance said the conference will “highlight the key role the shea industry plays in improving food security and climate” by showing its growing influence of sustainability.

“The conference will also provide hands –on training to 200 small women- owned business [es] working in the shea industry. “

The shea industry promotes food security by providing a healthy source of vegetable fat, fresh fruits, and a diversified source of income—up to 12% annually for some of the poorest rural families.

More than 16,000,000 women collect and process shea, leading the way to promote gender equity in the region, according to Global Shea Alliance.

Director of Africa Operations of Global Shea Alliance, Mr. Aaron Adu, at the launch of the this year’s conference in Tamale said the conference will focus on the sustainability of the shea industry by promoting farms that protect the environment, diversify food sources, and generate income from local and export markets.
