The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD), has burnt some illegal fishing nets it seized from fishermen in the fishing communities of the county.

“We have gone round the fishing communities to seize illegal nets. We’ve gone further to the courts to obtain a court order to enable us to destroy them.”

“The essence is to tell those into illegal fishing that the law frowns on it. When we arrest you we will take you through prosecution, get you a fine. At the same time we will seize the illegal nets and destroy them,” he added.

The fine ranges from 50 penalty units to 200 penalty units. This translates to between GHC 600 to GHC 2400

Many fishermen have in recent times complained about the use of illegal fishing methods by some of their colleagues in the industry.

They usually accuse the government of not doing its best to fight against the illegal actions.

However, Tsibu said the Fisheries Commission will continue to work to regulate the fisheries resources by ensuring that the laws governing the sector are obeyed.
