Minister calls for long-term financing for Agriculture

Dr. Ahmed said appropriate financing was needed to enhance the economic fortunes of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA).
 
 

Long term financing is need in the agriculture sector to expand production from subsistence farming into commercial venture as well as create employment and ensure food security, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Ahmed Yakubu Alhassan.

Speaking at the launch of a commercial agriculture investment guide for the northern savannah ecological zone of the country in Accra, Dr. Ahmed said appropriate financing was needed to enhance the economic fortunes of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) and that financial institutions must provide solutions tailored to both small scale and large scale commercial agriculture.

He said commercial agriculture is important in the transformation of the country’s developmental agenda and the need to create business opportunities in the sector.

Mr Sulley Adam, Chairman of SADA, speaking at the launch said SADA has been re-oriented to focus on its core pillars- facilitation, catalysation and co-ordination- to improve performance.

He further called for logistical support to enhance irrigation so as to lessen the zone’s dependent on rain for agricultural productivity.
